Gamers familiar with the MOH series are certainly in for a treat with this new iteration for a couple reasons. This third level follows a more traditional, recognizable MOH formula, though the game is set in an entirely different surrounding. After successfully handling the given missions, players then land on good old terra firma, and penetrate an enemy base in the Philipines. Planes attack from everywhere, but you man a powerful (and conveniently infinitely loaded) turret that can tear up enemy planes with a few shots. Your job is to man the turret and fend off the infinite flock of planes torching, bombing and destroying your military brothers. In the second mission, players man the turret on the deck of a smaller ship as the enire bay of once sleeping behemoth ships is pummeled around you. Joe must then man a turret to defend the U.S.S. In the first mission, players must work their way to the deck as their ship is being bombarded by Japanese airplanes. In MOH: Rising Sun, Joe's world is literally exploding around him, and the scenario grows even more intense from the first to the second mission. The game does, however, follow the same path as the shockingly emotional intro scene of Metal of Honor Frontline, which captivated all those who played it (and which was highly reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan). It looks both realistic and yet cartoonish, as if to please both worlds. Billowing smoke plumes flow dark and heavily from all around, the air is filled with bullets, flying shrapnel, and explosions. From the top deck, the sights of Pearl Harbor are dramatic: delivering a mixture of highly detailed warships, aircraft carriers, and ships of others kinds, surrounded by an artfully visualized background infused with a stylistic bent. Following these pluming fires below, you'll reach the deck, and fresh air, where the whole world explodes around you in a consciously orchestated slow-motion attack from the Japanese air force. What caught my eye are the fiery flames that you have to extinguish before ascending to the deck. From the early shots of your lead character Joe Griffin, the lower decks of your Pearl Harbor ship are plain and generic. Under new art director Thom Ang and supervisor Mark Lasoff, the game's look is all over the place, mixing realism, stylistic art-like backgrounds and peculiar particle, smoke and fire effects. For instance, the art style is different. Not surprisingly, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun also looks and plays differently. Without much of a squeak to the outside world, EA filled the new team positions and will deliver, on schedule, another Medal of Honor, less than one and half years later. If there's one thing about EA, however, it's a willful, powerful company and it's very smart when it comes to production schedules, teams, and coordination. For numerous reasons, the core internal teams behind the pair of hits split from the company to form independent development companies.
